Once you are over eighteen, you are legally considered an adult and therefore are able to make a will. For most people, this is the last thing they would think of doing at that age, but it is something you can do once you are that age.

Wills are often associated with being old and reaching the end of your life. When you are young, you do not want to think about or plan for the end of your life. You also may think that it is silly to make a will since you do not have anything that you want to leave to anyone. However, this may change and you may have an opinion on who should benefit if it does. You may want a certain charity or church to be named a beneficiary of your estate, or you may have certain family members you want to get something specific. These are all things that can be put into your Will.

Although you may consider eighteen to be too young to get a Will, a good time to create one is after the birth of your child or children. Most people have strong opinions on raising children and who they want to raise their children; that is something that can be arranged in your Will. You also may want to specify parts of your estate for your children when they reach a certain age or indicate certain inheritances are only to be used for specific purposes, like a college fund.

Remember that your will can always be updated after a change in your life. Setting up a Will when you’re young doesn’t mean you can never change it. It just means that you are preparing for any of the curves that life can throw at you, no matter your age or health.
